Angela Franks Wells of Tilt Gallery on the Road at Maison

Tilt Gallery on the Road at Maison Art & Antiques presents an exhibition of selected works by Angela Franks Wells. Her latest work took her into the mines of Arizona. She says the collection resulted from an obsession with copper and an abandoned form of photography from the 19th century.

Wells says she decided to photograph copper mines because of her love for the image quality produced by copper photogravures. But when she tried to gain access to the mines, she ran into problems. "I needed the core of my images to come from a mine that was actually 'happening now.'" Even in the copper state, she had to spend a great deal of time finding one in operation. A mine in Bagdad, Arizona finally let her on site. Then Wells' long days began.

Her displayed work is a limited edition of five hand pulled copperplate photogravures. Alongside the prints, the exhibit includes the copper plates that created each image. The plates are used to make the accompanying print, each one taking Wells around 30 hours to complete. Wells has been creating photogravures with copper plates for the last 8 years. The process starts with converting a negative to a film positive and ends with etching each plate by acid bath.

"Chains," a photograph by Wells in her Copper Mine exhibit at Tilt on the Road at Maison Gallery. Angela Franks Well's art originates from a love of labor. Being raised by a machinist and a mechanic, the necessity for hard work, skill, professionalism, and perseverance has been embedded in her being. "At the end of the day if the crevices of my hands are full and the dirt doesn't come out... it's been a good day" - Artist.

Maison also features these Arizona artists and craftsmen:

Virginia Pates' ceramics fired with Verde Valley earth; Donna Chesler's stunning polaroid transfers; Suzy Mound and Suzanne Trout's elegant jewelry; Kelley Foy's furniture crafted with patina steel and hand-carved wood; Angela Rocobono's reconstructed and recycled Cherry Bombin' Wear; Dave Rentz' reinterpretations of found objects; Linda Parker's Spirit Houses artwork; and Paul Jacques' handcrafted furniture from recycled materials

A Taste of Historic Old Town Cottonwood

Maison is the newest gallery to join the historic row of antique shops, galleries, specialty food shops, restaurants and wine tasting rooms. All of Old Town is within an easy walking distance from beginning to end. Four of the Verde Valley Wine Trail cellars and tasting rooms now call Old Town home. Each cellar features its very own wines, and most include selections from neighboring vineyards. The person pouring your wine is likely to have pruned the vines, handled the punchdowns or had some other hand early in the process - long before the wine hits your glass.

Wine lovers and foodies can join art lovers for the opening on August 13th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Limited selections will give guests a Taste of Historic Old Town Cottonwood. Sample recent wine releases from ASV and Pillsbury Wine Co. and hard-to-find cheese and chocolates from Bonne Lait. Let Orion Bakery's artisan breads bring out the best of imported olive oils from Verde Valley Olive Oil Traders. Finish the experience with samples from Crema Café's small batch gelato and sorbets.
